Fall

This is so true ... why are there already Christmas decorations up the end of October?

I love Christmas, but for some reason especially this year, I want to hold off a bit and enjoy fall a bit longer.  Felix was surprised when I told him this.  This year I've really come to appreciate fall and everything that comes with it.  I wish I had some more fall decorations, but there really isn't much time or a lot of extra money for that right now.  Maybe one day.

Remember how we went to the Apfelhof a few weeks ago?  We bought a spaghetti squash that has been patiently waiting to be cooked up and eaten.  Last night, I finally got around to doing something with it.  I googled recipes and found one that looked tasty.  Here is the result:

First I boiled water for the squash and then let it boil away for several minutes.

Then I had to chop up lots of veggies and cook them up.

After the squash was done, I scraped out the insides and it looked like this:
Then I mixed the squash with the veggies, marinara sauce and parmesan and placed it back into the squash.
Next, I topped it with cheese and more marinara sauce and then baked it for another 20 min.
It was tasty enough ... not my favorite recipe ever, but still good.  Felix hasn't had it yet ... tonight we'll eat the leftovers and I'm curious to hear what he thinks about it.

Pinterest inspired me yet again ... I decided to make a Fall wreath for our door.  I really, really wanted something Fall-ish for Thanksgiving when my parents and Felix's family come over.  I know I still have some time, but I'm glad that I got it done!  Thanks go to Amanda and Carrie for giving me fabric and pinking sheers!

Welcoming strangers into my home

For 16 weeks now, we have had a young refugee couple from Syria living with us. They have been married a little over a year and for the majority of that time have been separated from each other, since he made the journey to Austria alone and got everything in order so that she could come legally.  Let me backtrack a bit and tell you how it all started. As the refugee crisis really started to explode here, facebook was buzzing with articles, videos, pictures, etc. of the situation. I read a lot. I saw a lot. I was moved. I was troubled. But what could I do? I had a three year old and one year old at home.  ... I could teach some German. But when?   ... I could donate clothes and other items that were needed. But that didn't seem like enough. ... I could give money. But I wanted something more tangible.  I would put my youngest to bed and during those days, she needed lots of TLC in order to get to sleep. I kept thinking about the refugees and how t...

the little things

My day is filled with doing little things... wiping noses changing diapers fixing hair brushing teeth doing dishes straightening up books and toys that land everywhere tying shoelaces doing load upon load of laundry folding said laundry putting on hats making sandwiches  putting littles down for a nap and on  and on and on. Sometimes I get tired of the mundane. I get tired of life right now being so .... regular ... every day seems so the same. I was talking to my sister the other day about it and I said, I wouldn't want to change it, but yet sometimes the mundane gets to me. I get restless. I feel like the hamster running round and round the wheel and it's always the same. {just different friends and playdates} Today over breakfast while feeding the baby, I listened to a podcast {ahem, part of one }. And this really got to me: Love well in the little things. With great love .  Which is part of a very big thing - raising a fam...

6. chair

Z is loving her new "chair"- no more laying around in the buggy for this little one. {unless of course she's napping} She loves looking around and taking it all in. I love being able to see her better this way and laugh together. Just today I got stopped at the grocery store by a woman that asked me if I knew how adoringly my baby was looking at me.  It was a strange, yet funny and sweet, experience...very un-Austrian.
