Today was Julienne's 1st birthday party! :) I am so thankful that I am able to be here to celebrate with my precious little niece. It was such a fun day filled with many great moments. Watching Julienne "opening" her presents - as much as a 1 year old can ;) - and playing with her new kitchen was so sweet! I've been so blessed to be with my sisters and their husbands and my niece this summer - our times together are few throughout the year, but when we do get together they just become that much more special to me! Here are my GST for the day and then a few extra:
- celebrating the life of Julienne Anastasia Shanks
- seeing the beautiful smile and hearing the sweet laugh of Julienne
- playing Cranium with Leanna, Laura, and Andrew
- many great pictures taken today
- laughs with my sisters
- spray on aloe vera
- the plastic dishes (esp. spoons) that I got for Julienne being a big hit with her
- Laura asking me silly questions just to get me to say yes (we watched Yes Man tonight)
- Oreo stix
- playing crazy Uno

Welcoming strangers into my home

For 16 weeks now, we have had a young refugee couple from Syria living with us. They have been married a little over a year and for the majority of that time have been separated from each other, since he made the journey to Austria alone and got everything in order so that she could come legally.  Let me backtrack a bit and tell you how it all started. As the refugee crisis really started to explode here, facebook was buzzing with articles, videos, pictures, etc. of the situation. I read a lot. I saw a lot. I was moved. I was troubled. But what could I do? I had a three year old and one year old at home.  ... I could teach some German. But when?   ... I could donate clothes and other items that were needed. But that didn't seem like enough. ... I could give money. But I wanted something more tangible.  I would put my youngest to bed and during those days, she needed lots of TLC in order to get to sleep. a little check in on life over here

-- We had our "big reveal" on facebook. It looks like we'll be having another little girl! We're thrilled for a little sister for Zoey, plus the bonus of recycling all our baby girl clothes is awesome! But most importantly, baby is healthy and all is looking well!-- -- The weather here has been so great. We've been meeting lots of friends at playgrounds and parks and going for walks. It's fun to be able to play on the playground with Zoey now that she can walk and do things! But also very tiring for this pregnant mama! --  -- We've been doing lots of house things ... looking at doors, fences, different types of floors, kitchen appliances, etc. Next WEEK , they will start the digging part of building the house and then the following week , the basement will be built!! Done w/ orientations!!

On Thursday, the last day of orientations was completed! All the new staff has had a busy last 3 weeks, but they were very informative (sometimes overload on information though). It feels great to be done with orientations and to be starting school. School starts on Monday and things at the school have been crazy trying to get things ready to go. There is a rather large construction project taking place at the school and we have been working on that since the construction workers are behind schedule ... we've been tearing off paint, repainting, cleaning, etc. My classes will not start until Thursday, since elementary has half days until then. I'm so thankful for the extra time to get things done and be prepared for my classes. I'm a bit unsure as of what to do in classes ... so I'm hoping I'll come across some great ideas! Prayers for this are greatly appreciated!
